Kawasaki Disease Clinic

The Kawasaki Disease Clinic provides specialized care and information about the disease, including accurate diagnosis, treatment, and long-term prognosis of Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease is the most frequent acquired heart disease in children and is an acute febrile vasculitis of poorly understood etiology. If left untreated, about 20% of patients develop coronary complications such as coronary artery aneurysms, which can lead to myocardial infarction or sudden death.

Our goal is to prevent coronary artery complications through early diagnosis and treatment, and to improve the long-term prognosis of patients with coronary artery complications through regular testing and medication.

Symptoms of Kawasaki disease include high fever for more than 5 days, conjunctival redness in both eyes, oral mucosal/extremity changes, skin rash, and cervical lymph node enlargement. Patients with atypical symptoms may have a poor clinical outcome due to delayed diagnosis of Kawasaki disease. Infants and school-aged children under 6 months of age are especially at risk for cardiac complications because they often have no or mild symptoms and findings. Echocardiography is the simplest way to diagnose cardiac complications from Kawasaki disease. During the acute phase of Kawasaki disease, patients are hospitalized and treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, and the response to the initial dose is usually good. However, in rare cases, more than one dose of immunoglobulin or steroid treatment is required. After immunoglobulin treatment, patients are given low-dose aspirin for 6-8 weeks to prevent blood clots.

The Kawasaki Disease Clinic at Kyungpook National University Children's Hospital provides the highest level of medical care based on our experience in treating various forms of Kawasaki disease and its complications, and we will do our best to help infants, children, and adolescents overcome Kawasaki disease without heart complications.
